Our aunt was arrested a few hours ago and the bondsman just told us that even though her bail bonds have been posted, it’s going to take another 4 to 8 hours for the jail to release her. What gives? Is the bondsman lying because they haven’t done their job yet? This doesn’t make sense.
The bondsman is being truthful. When bail bonds are posted, many clients think the jailers are able to press some buzzer and that their loved one will be able to walk from the holding cell into the lobby right away. That’s simply not the case. Just like there is a paperwork process that needs to happen when someone is booked into the system, there is another internal process that their release paperwork needs to go through before the defendant can be released. In most cases, 4 to 8 hours is the average amount of time it takes for release paperwork to be processed by the jail. If the jail is slow and there isn’t a lot going on, the defendant might be released sooner. If they are very busy, it may take a bit more time. This is just based on the average time it takes.
